Berlin (KU64/29.01.2009) After a long and exhausting flight, we are On Monday 1/19/2009 landed in Cape Town and after 2 hours of driving in Paternoster in the "La Baleine" arrived. Simone jacket and her friend Deon Brand have warmly welcomed. In a small breakfast or the assistant came from the dentist of the West Coast, Dr. Engel, and we talked to, what we need and how everything is set up. It turned out that we can not start immediately and build as expected, because the first day of school after the holidays until Wednesday and we can build a precaution until at least Tuesday. In the evening there was a delicious barbecue with Simone and Deon.
Tuesday morning at 9 clock began our first "working day" and we built in a church hall next to the school our little "Practice". After the initial chaos we got into some structure and assumed to be able to treat in the afternoon may have. Dr. Engel also was added, greeted us the first kind, looked around what we do and asked all doctors and managers to a meeting. After a long time our doctors were stunned to us and said that we should not work, because we do not have a license to use high-tech equipment and Dr. Engel is afraid that something bad happened to the children and then he must bear the responsibility. Everyone was angry and in tears. Should all be in vain?
After much back and forth we agreed that Dr. Engel is the injections and we treat. The work of Dr. Schelske, our surgeons, he wanted to take over. On the first day there was soon an appeal with the students and parents. Each new school child was welcomed warmly, and said the pastor. We were also presented and all were eventually to go after an hour of speech and prayer to our work. Quick came the first patient. But it was the parents and the children as planned.
On Thursday came the little boys and girls in their cute school uniforms to us. They are so sweet with her pigtails and sweet and totally disciplined. All had left very bad teeth and so it surprised us even more that they almost all say without anesthesia and without a peep or batting treated by us. There were only a few who have wept bitterly. It almost broke my heart and I tried to calm her and keep her hands. And fast they fast trust. And have been waiting a long time since many children and see things as they were always brave. Especially the guys with each other was about to show any weakness and over again to her Mates shown signs that all is in order. Real funny.
At the end of each treatment course there was a gift. One could even imagine how popular they were. Sometimes we had to move the children so that they have not previously taken it all. And so we worked every day from 8 bis clock clock 16:30. We brought the little ones from out of their classrooms, where they have sat so patiently for their little red plastic chairs and listened attentively to the teacher. Even if they all had on our work very much afraid that was the bravest children I have ever experienced. And there we have it all closed in our hearts, we decided to work even for 2 days longer. We have only taken the free Sunday, because everyone goes to church here. Therefore, we enjoyed the sun on the beach on Sunday, picked us all sunburned and crafted shell necklaces. We have learned little from the 3 girls who earn so little money. We could not imagine how they struck with a large stone small holes in the shells. We sat down to under a lot of giggles and we helped them.
Wir looking forward to next year! We sincerely thank again the West Coast Kids Association, Simone Jacket, Dr. Ziegler, who have made this experience possible.
Berlin (KU64/28.01.2009) drops Saying goodbye really hard. The colleagues pack their bags one, but the thoughts are the children who were patients of small to large friends. Tears have been shed. The children of Paternoster will be missed! Unbelievable how fast time went by ...
The flight left at 8.15 clock and from Cape Town late in the evening we arrive in Berlin-Tegel. I sign up later with a detailed report.
Berlin (KU64/27.01.2009) post by Mrs Simone jacket Head of the Laureate Foundation after her return: "The departure of the children and the KU64 team was very difficult I had to fly back yesterday, because planning is waiting for the next project for the West Coast Kids on me ..
It is hard to describe what I feel . I am deeply touched by the willingness and the commitment of this team . I'm again shocked by the situation of children on the west coast and also happy with every goal, the we can achieve for the children to to support them, the to escape the poverty cycle and new to find prospects. Mothers told me repeatedly how happy they are over, smile again can - her dark, painful Teeth were treated. How happy they are that their children were treated. For them, a dentist visit is prohibitive, they do not even know how to get there. rotten teeth adheres to the stigma of poverty and people feel be stigmatized, losing their self-esteem.
The team worked under extremely difficult circumstances. All day on three stacked plastic chairs sitzend ununterbrochen zu behandeln, ist enorm anstrengend.
Die Schule informierte us on the first day that they know of some children that they are HIV positive, since the mothers are already acutely ill and therefore the children were tested. The majority of children are not tested, however, and unfortunately, it is like likely that a large percentage is already infected. Even one of our projects in the pipeline. We intend to implement a comprehensive HIV education campaign in cooperation with the South African HIV projects in Paternoster - and will encourage families to get tested in order to start timely stabilizing therapies.
The help and the dedication of the KU64 team went far beyond the dental use. Some team members accompanied me after a busy day to children who have to live under inhuman conditions . Violence, abuse, shame, hopelessness and despair , so unimaginable living conditions are commonplace these poor children. was very spontaneously from KU64 team to offer help, considering and discuss how the situation can be changed for these children.
It is far more going on than dental care. All these children have had a positive experience that you have to have before a dentist not afraid. Girls have been astonished that women also exercise the profession. The children were allowed to do that adults take time for them to accept them love and take care of them and take their fears seriously . The medical officer was able to do after his initial suspicion that colleagues share their knowledge with him. He told me that he will change many things in the future that his horizons expanded enormously medical was. And he could see that something may change. He has promised proceed, until we come back. Let's see if he will keep this promise.
I also think the KU64-Team has learned a lot to do so. run things differently in Africa, one can not as efficient as in
Germany work, nothing goes according to plan and you have to react flexibly to constantly changing circumstances and make the best of it. You have held so many little hands and in so many expectant and children's eyes looked hopeful. Help is a big responsibility and is linked to great expectations. However, even with a lot of joy and fulfillment .
I'm waiting back on the team, now in Berlin. We met for debriefing , evaluate, our joint action, the weaknesses, work out the strengths, opportunities and risks. To improve and optimize things. It was our first dental outreach program and I can say from my side, that, despite the initial difficulties was great. Children were treated to a whole school, many, many people were saved of acute dental pain and it was laid the foundation stone to dental hygiene. It is a start, as we know, most never is easy and I remember this one sentence of Goethe: "From stones that are one placed in the way, you can build nice.
The commitment of the team has exceeded our expectations, they are definitely any extra mile gone to as many people as any help possible. That the dental health of children and adults is so dramatic bad, but we have not expected. There is still much to do. But like Francis of Assisi said "First do is necessary, then the possible, and suddenly you can make it impossible."
I wanted me at this point also to the many Kommentareund Thank you for your interest in our campaign. Of course the mention of our criticism is justified, it unfortunately also in Germany bedürftigeund poor children are in need of help. Since I like to draw attention in allerDeutlichkeit out that in the dental field will guarantee basic care for children in Germany ist.Zahnärzte come at regular intervals in the nursery and Schulenwas on the west coast of South Africa as in many other parts of Africa is not given.
It should be noted that no children's charity in the region of Paternoster still active.
The desire for greater transparency about our Foundation's work völlignachvollziehen I can. Our Foundation was founded in December 2007, our website is under construction and will soon go online. You are welcome to request info@laureate-stiftung.de information about our Foundation undunsere work. We are held in trust in the Children's Fund Foundation Center in Munich. ... unser letzter Tag der Behandlung in Paternoster
Paternoster/Südafrika (KU64/27.01.2009) Today is our last day of treatment in Paternoster. We have managed to treat even an entire class - despite a power failure just before the end of an hour. While the reduction was even treated to everything really is ready.
We are very pleased with what we have here ( www.KU64.de ) and we seem to have done makes a difference. For the resident doctor wants to do with them next week on, we could not handle. Surprising when you consider that he was on top as against this action. Nice to see that our enthusiasm has jumped on him.
Thus, We leave with a good feeling, Paternoster. For us, it is clear that we want to come back. Our action was not only a drop in the bucket ... Quite a lot of drops but must follow.
keep the children at least here now a toothbrush in his hand and take oral hygiene more seriously than before!
Paternoster, South Africa (KU64/26.01.2009) The number of treated children is getting smaller. The first is a good sign: we've done a lot in Paternoster. Not only school children but also parents, we have treated. This also means that our job slowly but surely, is done and now here we are away. That's right, the gentlemen very sad.
There are already plans to come back. It's nice to see happy faces at school, on the street, anywhere!
And all want us to come back. And what we want. Critical voices that said, our action would always just a drop in the ocean fall silent immediately if one of the people here has. We want to help the long term and we will do! WE COME AGAIN!
Paternoster, South Africa (KU64/25.01.2009) Today we have the small children (1st class) treated. It really is incredible, but almost all have really never had a toothbrush in his mouth ...
Our medical teams ( http://www.ku64.de/ ) are really without interruption on the drilling and filling ... These children show a lot of courage, either pull the syringe or the tooth, if the doctors treat them, say not make a sound - in Germany would be unthinkable ...
Tomorrow we will still ranhängen einenTag because the masses can not be done. We wanted to work Sunday, but that has not allowed us the competent dentist unfortunately. He would not get extra for it ... Tomorrow we will also parents still treat that have a lot of pain.
It is great to go down the street from the school over and see the children we have already treated. You run to meet us and embrace us very warmly and that is exactly what we had wanted as a reward for our work here .....
Paternoster, South Africa (KU64/23.01.2009) Today we also made it what ... Overall, we have treated nearly 50 children.
First, we recorded the results and then I tried with the kids in the laundry room and have you brushing your teeth to get close to you and explain that it is important that they should not eat so much candy. That was a very funny matter and we had a lot of fun ... the only problem is that I'm now almost 15 times had to clean the teeth :-))))
After the teeth were cleaned, it was serious for children. But since our Dentists ( http://www.ku64.de/ ) absolute professionals, it was not for the kids so bad. They are usually used to worse, because if they are sometimes treated, this takes place under inhuman conditions of life: pulling teeth without anesthesia is not an isolated case, for example ...
I've never seen in my life so brave children. That this situation was new to all of them have gone through great. And WE are now satisfied, because we could finally work properly. It's already on a heart when a sweet little one South African woman's teeth and made them with her bright white smile, then go play again ... I've rarely been so lots of sun in the smile of children as seen from the Paternoster.
